Buglasan 2009 Hush
BUGLASAN FEVER IS HERE!
Okay, I don’t need to be sarcastic over the idea that Buglasan seems to be silent even when nearing his festival date. It’s four days to go before Buglasan 2009 and I am uncertain if its attracting the locals and tourists about the said event.
This year’s Buglasan Festival of Festivals promises to be more spectacular than the previous year with more contingents slated to battle it out during the Festival of Festivals Showdown.
Some 13 contingents from various local government units will participate during the Showdown on October 23 at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.
Last year, only five contingents competed in said showdown.Participating in the showdown this year are Bayawan City, Sta. Catalina, Dauin, Bacong, Dumaguete, Sibulan, Tanjay, Bais City, Jimalalud, Canlaon City, Mabinay, and Zamboanguita.
The Festival of Festivals of Showdown is the highlight of the 10-day Buglasan festivities.
The festival which runs from October 16 to 25 will kick-off with the 6th Buglasan Farm Family Congress and culminate in the crowd-drawing Fireworks Competition on the evening of Oct. 25 Other events include a My Negros Oriental Photo Exhibit at the Sidlakan Negros Art Gallery, Lutong Garbo cookfest, Marching Band Showdown, live band competitions, cheerdance competition, and the Outstanding Oriental NEgrense Awards, among others.
Board Member Mariant Escano-Villegas in a press conference said that the over-all Buglasan champion this year will receive P500,000 worth of projects. Second place winner will get P300,000 worth of projects and the third, P200,000.
Villegas explained that winners are judged based on a point system. “For every event that a local government unit participates in, they have a corresponding point,” she said.
Each time the LGU wins in an event, whether first, second or third, they get a corresponding merit point. At the end of the Buglasan, all their points are tallied up.
Villegas disclosed that the provincial government appropriated P2M for this year’s Buglasan celebration. “We expect to get more funding from our sponsors, sellers and corporate booths,” she added.
The national officers of the Board Members’ League are expected to witness the Buglasan festivities this year, along with board members from the VIsayas Island in Regions 6, 7 and 8.
With more LGUs participating in the festival this year, Villegas is confident that the performance level this year is better than that of last year. (PIA/RMN) - Negros Chronicle
The main reason of having the hush-hush I guess is because the event venue is somewhere in Sidlakang Negros, which I believe is far from the downtown area. Downtown Dumaguete is where a lot of people are going for their past times.
One tricycle driver even commented that placing the event in that area decreases the excitement for the festival because people will expect the same old structures for the booth as of last year or even two years ago.
I have to admit that he had a point there. I guess what the provincial goverment is doing is making sure that the event is cost-efficient and will not cause any traffic every festival. But my main concern is it’s popularity. Now I wonder what will come up a few years from now when the building’s color will fade and less and less people will succumb to the exciting festival of festivals in the province.
And of course, I don’t want to be pessimistic about it, so I do hope the provincial goverment will create activities that just not support cultural heritage but will also adapt to the cunning and event’s hungry generation like ours. ( Hehehehe…)

I actually think that putting the venue in Sikdlakang Negros was a good move. Crisis naman, and putting up a booth takes thousands of dollars for every municipality, money that they could use for other more practical projects. The booths were very elaborate and very nice to look at , true, pero they were temporary and sakit lantawon every time they had to be torn down. This way, having a permanent booth means the municipalities don’t have to spend as much every year, and I think they are allowed man to add to their booths or think of new creative gimiks so they don’t show the same stuff year after year. I think Buglasan had a good turn-out this year. Dghan man ghapon tawo, and traffic gani kaau dapit sa amo. I think people just need more time to get used to the idea nga ang Buglasan naa na sa Sidlakang Negros, and each municipality needs to be given a good enough incentive to make their booths more attractive to draw more visitors in.
correction: not ‘thousands of dollars’– pesos diay hehe.
nasobraan ka ug freelance selle? dollars man gud. joke!
oh well. maybe it does save more.. but dba in the long run it draws in bigger crowds if naa sa Freedom? and if I remember correctly, most of the accommodations that the city offers was fully booked during those times when the Buglasan Festival was held at Freedom Park. These days, it’s just … not that festive. Then again, maybe people do need a little time to get used to the idea… or at least an opportunity to improve the booths
I agree with Lurchie, I guess the better thing for the Cities/Municipalities to do is innovate the places after a year, this way, it brings history and creativity at the same time.
amen! amen!
